What is Whitsunday?
The Christian holiday of Pentecost is derived from the Greek word Pentekoste which means 50 and therefore marks the 50th day since Easter Sunday. Pentecost originally arose from the Jewish Feast of Weeks, in memory of a time when God gave the 10 commandments to Moses. Christians found this similar to the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and therefore the Christian Church adopted it.
The feast is also called White Sunday, or "Whitsunday", especially in the United Kingdom, where traditionally the next day, Whit Monday, is also a public holiday.
