Oranjepolder

Arable farm in Arnemuiden, Zeeland

Sleep like a King at FarmCamps Oranjepolder

Meet Sentine, Gavin and their three children Jacob, Alice and Tobias. This cute couple met in a construction site in Middelburg. He was the archaeologist and she the intern. Now they are the proud residents of one of Walcheren’s largest historic farms, voted the most beautiful farmyard in Zeeland in 2019.

In 1990 it became the property of Sentine’s parents Jo and Tineke, who developed the farm and campsite into what it is today. Even though Sentine took over in 2018 you will definitely still see Jo and Tineke help out around the farm.

Farmer Sentine can be seen working on the farm every day. When she is not busy cultivating 40 hectares of wheat, potatoes, sugar beet or maize, she is busy with the campsite and her guests. Gavin still works as an archaeologist and you will see a little less of him on the farm during the week, but in the holidays he likes to get out his metal detector to search for treasures in the fields with the kids. How cool is that!

And it does not stop here. How about the pigs, chickens, sheep, goats, geese, cats and rabbits that have to be fed? Or race endlessly across the yard with one of the many go-karts or bikes? And when the weather is nice you can be at the Veerse Meer Lake or one of the beautiful beaches of Walcheren, although we suspect it is quite possible that you may not leave the grounds of this hugely hospitable and beautiful farm!

Where do I sleep

Oranjepolder is situated right in the middle of the gorgeous Veerse Meer lake and the town of Middelburg, on the Zeeuwse Walcheren “Island.” This area of land which is named the Oranjepolder (polder means reclaimed land) was reclaimed in 1618. It is within this area of reclaimed land that you will find the national treasure and monument of Oranjepolder farm, which is now home to farmer Sentine and her husband Gavin. This listed farm was formerly a royal estate belonging to the House of Orange no less!

At Oranjepolder you can choose between 2 types of luxurious tents. There are 4 luxury Safari tents with their own private toilet. The showers are located in the former pigsty which has been transformed into a modern shower block. It is also possible to rent private sanitary facilities. There are also 4 luxurious Barn tents with private toilet, bath and wait for it…….., a dishwasher in the fully kitted out kitchen. It’s going to be hard to choose!

This FarmCamps farm is situated on a quiet road surrounded by fields. Veerse Meer lake is nearby: a great location for swimming and watersports. With its shallow shore it is particularly suitable to families with children.

The farmyard houses the family’s residential building and a huge barn. To the rear and adjacent to the monumental barn are 4 fields. The quiet field at the rear is where you will find the 8 luxurious Safari and Barn tents which look out onto wide panoramic views of arable farmland.

The fields behind the barn are reserved for private camping emplacements. This is also where you find the playground so the children are never far away and always safely in sight.

Finding out is fun!

No farm adventure would be complete without learning a thing or two from the professionals. And farmer Sentine personally takes care of that. Sentine will teach you all about the wheat, potatoes, sugar beet and maize she grows. Grandpa Jo, a farmer in heart and soul, also lends a hand and likes to talk about his work. And every day you can help feed the chickens, sheep, goats, geese and pigs that roam the cuddly meadow.

If you are more into playing, the farm will also satisfy your needs. Race around the farmyard on your go-kart or bike. Countless laps around the barn: who is the fastest or chase each other with a group. Climb on the playground equipment and slide down the slide. See who can jump the highest on the trampoline and bake cakes in the mud kitchen or play football. In the large barn, a recreation room has been set up with a straw play corner, a playhouse, a shuffleboard and a table tennis table. There are also picnic tables, so in bad weather you will have all the space you need here to enjoy reading or drawing.
